Introduction to GYROKINESIS® WS

The GYROKINESIS® method - originally called "Yoga for Dancers" - is a unique movement system that incorporates circling and spiraling motions in all planes of movement!

Derived from the Latin, "Gyrus", meaning circling, and the Greek "Kinesis", meaning movement, the GYROKINESIS® method is the creation of Juliu Horvath and has been around for 40 years. Unlike linear exercise, GYROKINESIS® exercises respect the circularity of our joint movements. We learn how to create stability through opposition and mobilize our spine through organic spinal motions which are accompanied by specific breathing patterns. Instead of hinging at our joints, we scoop, thereby decompressing and supporting our joints in the process. The result is a body that feels energized instead of worn out. Participants experience a feeling of well-being. It can help correct faulty movement patterns and improve posture, allowing your bones to properly align, so that your muscles, joints and ligaments work as nature intended. This healthy postural alignment applies to all planes and to all orientations in space. This results in your vital organs being in the right position so that they can function at peak efficiency.

In this GYROKINESIS® workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of the GYROKINESIS® system: how to create stability in your spine and joints in all planes of motion, and how to move in all the basic spinal motions with ease. Each class begins on a chair with a series of fluid spinal motions which increase in range of motion, and prepare the body to explore more complex movements with agility and ease. The class continues on the floor with exercises that expand on the spinal motions, gradually adding more complex sequences, incorporating more movements of the hips, shoulders, hands and feet. The floor exercises may be followed by a rhythmic standing sequence that incorporates balance and cardiovascular exercises. The session ends with a calming, unwinding sequence designed to prepare the body and mind to reintegrate with the every day world.

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® includes the GYROKINESIS® method (using a mat and a stool) and the GYROTONIC® method (using specialized equipment) Started as a means to rehabilitation, this method has spread to 53 countries and is practiced by people from all walks of life - including accomplished athletes and dancers, college students, baby boomers, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.
